April 1, 2018: Rights of Spring

This year, Easter and April Fools Day fall on the same day. I do not know who or how decides what day Easter should fall on – I just know that for some odd reason, Easter falls on a Sunday. It has never been any different and will never be any different.

I also recall in the past that Easter was equated with daffodils being in bloom and with crocuses coming up. I cannot tell you what a crocus in bloom looks like, but I can tell you what they look like when they first appear. They are green, and appear in clumps.

No crocuses here, although we are now seeing signs of spring. In places, I can now see the ground. The snow berms ARE melting, and there is heat in that sun. I came in tonight at 9:30 p.m. thinking that it was 7:30 p.m. If we hadn’t gotten the three dumpings in March, we would be in the midst of Breakup. Now, if say, we have sunshine and high temperatures for the next few days, Breakup will happen quickly. I think that it is going to be a long, slow breakup, and that we will get one more snowfall.

Because it is the first day of the month, I did horsey check-ups, just two, Tinni and Tyra. The road is now bare in places, and today there were no ice patches to speak of. In addition to my taking Tinni out, Pete rode Raudi and I rode Hrimmi. We went down to Ridge Runner.

Hrimmi is doing amazingly well – she is our late bloomer/diamond in the rough. I’d like to think all the ground work that I’ve been doing with her has made a difference, and as well, the fact that Pete has been so judicious in getting her out so often last Fall and this winter. Maybe these things made a difference as well as the fact that she finally matured mentally and physically.

Now I’m thinking that I’ll ride her in the CTR because she will be easy to work with. Pete is going to be the ride manager, so Raudi and I won’t have a riding buddy. This matters – if I am to go at it alone, I want to ride a dependable steady eddy horse. The thing that Raudi has that Hrimmi does not is many years of experience. But we shall see how spring training goes.
