May 11, 2021: Spring

I am more attuned to it this year than any other. I’ve been paying close attention to the changes going on. Me, noting that I am now not having to don all the winter gear or root around, as would a hog for truffles, for my gloves. I don’t like wearing gloves – I have yet to find a pair that are thin and allow for dexterity and at the same time, warm enough.

The birds are back, saw a robin hop to the highest point of a spruce tree tonight. The older spruce trees have succumbed to beetle kill, but the younger trees are looking very healthy.

Raudi

Got just a few patches of snow here and there.

The horses are now on the flip side of shedding – they are looking less like ponies now and more like horses.

All the animals seem in good spirits. I am now, in the mornings, feeding Ranger with Tinni. He’s enjoying getting out.

The days are again long, and so I am outside more.

Pete and I purchased new running shoes yesterday. And so today we went for a run. My running partner was Tinni and Pete’s running partner was Shadow. Pete has been exercising all winter, so Tinni and I struggled to keep up with him.

Today I went to the dentist, had my dental trays adjusted. The staff is going to talk about getting a Bright Lights Bookcase going.

We are still working on getting the Bright Lights Book Project grant check. We’re zoning in on it. Most likely this will happen tomorrow.

Today I worked at the meeting house, with Shelia, another volunteer. We got through what Bill, another volunteer, had left behind. One of life’s bigger challenges now awaits me – I am going to have to find an organization to take 20 or so boxes of dog books. I will work on this tomorrow morning.

Pete and Nan Potts, a Tuesday volunteer, went and sorted and brought back several boxes of books to the meeting house. Then Pete and I took what I’d already sorted and got them to the distribution sites. It was a good day’s work.

I brought home another box of books – this included several dog books. I just wish I had room on my shelves for more. Sure, I’ll read them. I’m actually at the point of no return – there is no way that I’ll ever have the time to read all the books that I now own. And I keep acquiring more. . .

Once back home, I first rode Hrimmi and then rode Raudi, on the loop road then on the trails. It was then that I noted the above signs of spring. Hrimmi was a bit sluggish, but Raudi seemed energized by the seasonal change. She has a beautiful slow canter, and when she’s in shape, like now, she is like riding a rocking horse.

I am waiting on one thing, that is the smell of the cottonwood trees.
