January 26, 2021: Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Okay, so the temperature is again in the single digits. The warm spell we had, it wasn’t going to last. I wanted to blame it on climate change, and think little more about it. A veterinarian once remarked that humans, unlike most other mammals, can only live within a certain temperature range. He was right. This human, in particular, isn’t cut out for temperatures below 10 F.

It was 5 F and slightly breezy this morning when I took Shadow and Tinni for a walk. I started out walking into the wind – my nose and cheeks got cold. Then up and around the corner, the wind was at my back for a bit, so I was okay.

Hrimmi checks out the course

I attempted to do agility this morning, with Pete making the videos. To his credit, he was very, very patient with me. I had to take my hands out of my gloves to get a hold of the treats, and my fingers immediately got cold. Raudi and Tyra were quite clearly not into off-line agility. They kept going to differing targets and wandering around. Very frustrating. Add to this the moose are now moving around and are close by. What the horses can’t see, they can smell. I can hardly blame the mares for having some angst, but by now they ought to be used to moosey moosey being out and about.

Lastly, I decided to take Hrimmi through an easier course. She knocked a pole but otherwise did just fine. So, we have one video done. I am not sure we’ll get the others done – the cold is too much for me.

It was borderline cold as far as riding goes. A good day to go to town and instead get a shipment of books ready to take to the Presbyterian Hospitality House. I had some assistance with cleaning and categorizing – to the rescue, my dear friend Nan Potts and a friend who is in her choir. Sad to say, they are not singing right now because of Covid. Very unfortunate.

Nan is an amazing woman – one of these individuals who is naturally very upbeat and very social. She is like Pete in that she really likes people and has many, many friends. As we were sorting, I’d hand her books and she’d say, “my friend so and so would really like this book.” And she took books that I thought no one would want; for instance, one in which the subject is the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. I nearly pitched that thing a week ago. This is a reminder to me – continue to be judicious when sorting, there is a book out there for everyone. I just have to get them into the right hands.

After Nan and her friend left (I did not get her name – Face recognition goes out the window when people put on masks), I continued to work – got the Christmas books sorted out and the textbooks in order. I concluded by shredding cardboard boxes.

I’m now home, inside, soon will eat dinner. Then I have to go back out and tend to the horses. Brrrrrrrr. I wonder if spring will ever get here.
