April 11, 2023: Pete, Downstairs Cooking Dinner

Alys, upstairs, writing dispatch. Outside, the snow is falling, big, fat, heavy flakes, now moving sideways. I’d be thrilled if this was the first snowfall of the year. I’m less than thrilled because it’s mid-April. This has got me to wondering if there is going to be a spring. I’m glad that I got home from town before it really started coming down.

Downstairs, I smell vegetables cooking. We are having fried tofu and stir fry. I have ruined my dinner by having blue corn chips. Pete didn’t say anything about this. Very well. I will eat my share.

A good day, acknowledged. If this was a morning dispatch, I would have expressed doubt about everything going well. Everything did, as usual. The problem is that at the day’s end, particularly when things do go well, I then accept this as a matter of course.

I stopped at the Meeting House, and I picked up books for the Palmer Senior Center. A board member on the Palmer Arts Council was heading into the building. He introduced himself as Dean Phipps. We had a long talk – actually he did the talking. The arts council is having a meeting tomorrow, and they’ll decide what their future holds.

I had very little gas when I left here this morning. My letting the gas tank nearly run dry before I fill it is a very bad habit. Well, I made it to the Tesoro station, then, much to my dismay, I discovered that I could not get the little door that encloses the gas cap open. Upon close examination, I realized it was frozen over. I took out a piece of wood, a chock block that Jim had left in the vehicle, and I banged on the door. The ice fell off and the door opened. I was relieved for I feared that I’d have to call and ask Pete for assistance. And at the time, Pete was out bicycling.

I doubled back and went to the Palmer Senior Center. I got a good parking spot. Some days are better than others for doling out books. Today was a good day. I dropped off a bag of clothing. I also left a lot of paperbacks in the basement. A nice surprise, I was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the seniors. This was not from the upstairs administration, but from the book recipients themselves.

I next went to the Meeting House and began what I thought would be a lengthy sorting/straightening/shlepping afternoon. It went amazingly fast, and I was done by late this afternoon. There were also two cleaning crews, Lois and Pat first assisted, then Pam Hyke assisted. I now have enough books on hand to box up and take with me to Barrow on Friday.

A good day. The snow is now coming down hard. Spring is not on the way.
