January 13, 2023: Son of Daylight

Daylight is returning, coming to a community near you. No one is happier about this than I am – late this afternoon I had my hairs cut (all of them) and after, I had time to do some distributing before heading home, in the near dark. It was 4:00 p.m. A month ago, I would have had to have gotten a ride home.

I resumed going back to my regular hairdresser. I took a hiatus from going to this particular shop – I felt like it was time for a change. Getting a haircut, styled or set is not just about getting the haircut styled or set. It’s also about interacting with your stylist.

I went to a different stylist for a while. It was good because we talked horses. Actually, she talked horses and I listened. Horse people are like that. I do enjoy listening. The only

exception to this rule was the horse people in Fairbanks, Alaska. It was possible to have a real conversation with them. They don’t seem to have the community ethos that they used to have, which is too bad because I really liked all of them.

I wish we were still in touch – back in the day I was fearful about doing long rides, this was before Raudi was well trained. Now she would easily hold her own, as would Hrimmi and Tyra.

I didn’t talk at all with Betty, my hair cutter, about my horses. We once did a reading together, she painted portraits of goats, and I did a reading. We did talk a bit about the goats. We just mostly got caught up on what’s been going on the past few years.

The horses, today I took them individually for a walk. Raudi was energetic but stayed close to me. Tyra took off several times at a full gallop, stopped, then galloped back to me. She was headed in the direction of home when a car came down the road. I yelled out her name and she came running back to me. I talked for a bit with the occupant of the car; it was someone that I knew. Tyra stuck her head in the car the way Tinni used to do – he used to mooch for potato chips.

I last got Hrimfara out. She did amazing as well, and when on the return trip, she stood fairly still when I talked to neighbors. I knew she wanted to do something, so I had her sidepass across the road.

Right now, life’s biggest unfairness is that I am not spending enough time with these very well educated animals. In order for this situation to change, I’m going to need to find volunteers to do some of the book project work. I can do this. I will do this.
