June 4, 2023: A Conversation amongst the Three Mares: Overheard while cleaning the enclosure.

Raudi: This hay, tastes the same as the last load Pete brought in.
Tyra: It’s probably from the same place.
Hrimmi: It’s no better and no worse than the last load.
Tyra: At least we are now supplementing our diet with grass.
Hrimmi: The one thing I don’t like about Alys is that she limits our grazing time.
Tyra: This is because she fears that we might founder if we eat too much.
Raudi: This is an impossibility. Look at how little grass there is outside this pen.

The three mares

Hrimmi: She could at least let us graze on our way too and from the trailhead.
Raudi: Don’t hold your breath.
Hrimmi: Why would I hold my breath.
Tyra: Don’t hold your breath is just an expression.
Hrimmi: Meaning?
Tyra: It isn’t going to happen.
Raudi: It seems like we should be able to do something about this. We have more strength than she does.
Tyra: The problem is that there are consequences when a horse errs on the side of wrong.
Hrimmi: Particularly if she’s carrying a crop.
Tyra: I like how she uses it to invite us to move forward.
Raudi: I like it when she leaves it at home.
Hrimmi: Those hard slaps, ugh.
Tyra: Alys and Pete – we could do worse.
Raudi: But we could do better.
Tyra: How so?
Raudi: They could, for starters, increase the hay rations.
Hrimmi: And?
Raudi: Increase the amount of yard time.
Tyra: Yes, but you couldn’t find two owners with bigger hearts than these two.
Hrimmi: I suppose. I don’t know any different. I was born here.
Raudi: And Alys purchased me before I was a year old, so my memories of the time prior to that are nearly non-existent.
Tyra: And I came here when I was two years old. I did like it where I then lived. I had access to a large pasture, and the other fillies and I had a lot of running room.
Hrimmi: And you were given plenty of hay?
Tyra: Yes, and lots of grazing time.
Raudi: Siggi, Signy, and I spent considerable time on a large horse ranch.
Hrimmi: This is where I was conceived?
Raudi: Yes.
Hrimmi: I would like to go and check this place out.
Raudi: Me too.
Tyra: Then why not?
Raudi: Pete doesn’t want to drive that far.
Tyra: I don’t see why not. Traveling is fun.
Hrimmi: That is if you’re a horse in a three horse slant trailer.
Tyra: Yes, I remember our last trip. I saw so many things.
Hrimmi: I liked it when we came to rest stops and Alys gave the kids crackers to feed us.
Raudi: I liked it when Alys gave us crackers.
Hrimmi: Why doesn’t she give us crackers when we’re not travelling.
Raudi: I think Alys thinks they’re too fattening.
Tyra: I think that this just hasn’t crossed her mind.
Hrimmi: Look up – here she comes. She has a rope and halter in hand.
Raudi: Who’s going out first?
Tyra: I’ll do the honors.
