June 21, 2023: Summer Solstice

Overcast all day. And it will be overcast all night. I would have liked a bright sunny day, and watched the sun circle around, east to west, before setting. But we don’t always get what we want. Sometimes we want what we get.

On and off, drizzling today. Made it easier to work inside; though I am going to do something about the venetian blinds, would like to replace them with something else. I no longer have a view of a residential neighborhood, but rather the back side of a cityscape, a parking lot, streets.

Pete and Robert work on shelves

Today I had the side door propped open with a piece of wood – this seems to be what we use – and a meat truck, delivering meat for the restaurant, pulled up. Of course, I thought about this meat, and where it came from, most likely the Lower 48 – and how the animals were slaughtered. This is of no concern to restaurant patrons, who eat what’s served to them. Even Pete has no questions.

Tonight, to celebrate the solstice, we went for a ride after dinner. I rode Hrimmi and Pete rode Tyra. We did our trail system. It was buggy; fortunately, the mares moved out. Raudi got a break.

I’ve been working very hard, in hopes that we might do a trek. As the amount of time available to do such a trip diminishes, the days that we’re allowing for such a trip are also diminishing. Neither Pete nor I could have worked any harder than we have – and we have worked hard. The shelves are finally in place in our distribution area, located in the Historic Eagle Hotel, and the children and young adult fiction books are now on the shelves. I got half of the grown up hardback fiction and paperback fiction on the metal shelves Pete put up today.

Rebekah (stalwart BLBP board member) got assigned to sort, categorize, and clean the young adult and children’s nonfiction. This is a huge, and arduous task, which is going to take several days. She’s doing the sorting on the nonfiction shelves, so I can’t sort and shelf the nonfiction until she’s done.

Two volunteers who are homeschooling their kids came in today and further sorted and cleaned children’s books. They did an entire table’s worth. They got down and worked on the floor. I didn’t have my camera – it would have been a great picture, these two parents surrounded by books. I was of course glad that we’d vacuumed and shampooed the rug.

Every night I lay awake and figure out what I’m going to do the following day. Tomorrow is going to be a tougher day because I can’t do much without additional labels and boxes. I’m stuck, stuck, and stuck.

Once again, I found myself thinking of how this all began, and how I didn’t have a clue as to what to do with the books. Now we do have our own space, and happy me, I have a company vehicle, one that will soon have a logo that I designed.
