August 13, 2023: Clockwork

These days, most days go according to plan. Still, beforehand, I fret particularly if I am ill prepared. Today was (I thought) going to be one of those days. I had to go into town, to the hotel, and move the newspaper boxes. They are not heavy, just cumbersome.

We have a combination four wheel hand cart/two wheel dolly. It is currently set up as a hand cart. We set books on the hand cart, sometimes multiple layers. We move larger objects with the dolly. The two newspaper boxes are larger objects. I was going to

High tunnel today

have to change it to make it was a dolly, so that I might move the newspaper boxes to the outer room, and there sand them.

I’ve watched others make this conversion. I have to actually do such things myself, of course with guidance. I had not paid super close attention when others have changed this thing out. I thought this was going to be a big oh oh.

Pete had a lot of things to do here and didn’t want to go to town to do just one little thing. We figured if I could not complete the conversion, I’d call him and he’d come to town.

Well I got to the hotel and saw that Bill was there. In seconds, his daughter Hattie came into the room. I hadn’t seen Hattie in years. She’s an impressive individual, an airplane pilot, now working on getting her instructor’s license. I gave her the tour. It was interesting, seeing our set-up through her eyes. She was very impressed. I pointed out repeatedly that her father was a big part of this.

Well, Bill set up the dolly, did it in ten seconds. And Hattie rolled both newspaper boxes into the other room. Hattie also gave Bill an assist, so she got some volunteer hours in.

Getting assistance from Bill and Hattie was at least, in my mind, serendipitous. What were the odds of their showing up and entering one door as I entered the other? Very slim. It is interesting that quite often there are serendipitous occurrences in relation to this project. It must be because good begets good. The more negative energy there is, the harder things are to accomplish.

The day progressed. Pam, who has been a volunteer for some time and is now a BLBP board member came and assisted in cleaning the kids’ books. I had those boxes to sand, but I instead puttered around, talking to her, as best I could providing witticisms. I got the bee booth and the petting zoo booth books ready to go and added to the parade book bins.

I wasn’t up for sanding. In fact, I considered not doing this today, but doing it tomorrow, before the pick-up time. Then I thought, it will still be there. So I grabbed the sandpaper, divided it into squares and had at it.

At the day’s end, I felt a sense of accomplishment, for I’d finished a task that I had concerns about. Sad to say, the hurdle in front of me was larger than the hurdle behind me.
