September 20, 2023: Home Alone

It’s 8:05 p.m. and it’s dark out. The leaves on the trees are now various shades of orange, yellow, and red. The air would have a nip in it, but it’s very wet out. The air does have a crisp smell though.

Woke up to rain. Been raining all day. I kicked myself even harder today for not riding yesterday. Well, there’s tomorrow but more rain is predicted.

I decided to stay home because I didn’t have that much book shlepping to do. Pete took off early for school, this is his long day. So I had to keep myself occupied. I ended up keeping myself preoccupied.

My workday began with a search for a blank journal. I began pulling old journals off the shelf – they all had writing in them. None were full. I finally found a large journal with a pale blue cover. I’d decided to make this journal my volunteer database. I will in a bit have someone assist me in putting this database on computer. This was of course a brilliant idea.

In looking for this, the illusive journal, I knocked several books off several shelves. And I soon had a huge pile of books underfoot. I subsequently spent the next few hours sorting through and categorizing books. I got some off the floor and I set other books aside to pass on to appreciative readers.

I stopped every so often to check my email, and I discovered that the short list for the Community Impact award had been posted. Well, we along with 19 other nonprofits are listed. The 30 other nonprofits did not have enough votes and so they did not make the short list.

I am proud of our accomplishment since the other Anchorage-based nonprofits are the heavy hitters. They Include the United Way of Anchorage, which is a very well-known organization that’s been around for some time. I am now calling us, “The Little Nonprofit that Could.”

The not so good news is that it costs $50.00 a person the night of the event to get in the door. I asked for a free waiver and did not get it. I talked with Pete, and we considered not going. I had time to think about this as I sorted through books – it’s pricey, but this will be an excellent networking opportunity. Plus, there may be media coverage.

So I’ve decided that we should go and so we will go. This event is the evening before Seuss on Saturday.

I did find a place for the journals. And in the afternoon I did outside chores, which included pen cleaning. I also took the dogs for a walk, brought in wood, and picked the last of the tomatoes.

I came back in a few hours later and washed the dishes and put more wood on the stove.

I have saddles to clean, but this is going to have to happen tomorrow morning.

Maybe tomorrow will be Home Alone II.
