January 26, 2023: Every Which way But Sideways

I think that I prefer to go sideways rather than up or down. I feel more rooted when I move sideways. My energy level also remains more level. Sideways, this was that sort of day.

I woke up thinking about what I’d heard yesterday, which was that a comet was supposed to come close to planet earth, sometime today. Of course, like many others, I wondered if it would go off course and hit the earth. Then I wondered where. Then I wondered if the planet would go spinning out of control and if we’d all be clinging to it tenaciously.

Then I wondered if there are often other asteroids out there, and if we happened to hear about this one because it was a slow news day.

We humans live with the possibility of dying at any time. As we get older, this gets more likely. And more and more of those around us often go in strange ways.

I recently saw a photo in the New York Times of a landslide in California. It was onto a road. The video showed rocks and small debris. Then boom, a huge rock came tumbling down, out of nowhere, onto the road. Behind it was a truck, I think one belonging to the California Department of Transportation. I suspect that the truck was stopped, and that the driver knew about the big rock that was further up the hill.

But seeing this got me to thinking – things like this happen all the time. And sometimes rocks have your number on them and sometimes they don’t.

Seems like nearly every day there’s a near miss of one kind or another. Today, my near miss: The Great White Hope stalled out in the entrance to the Trunk Road Roundabout. Hope was having a really bad morning, she was belching and stalling out and lurching like a drunk – I was concerned. I had Pete drive ahead of me to where I was going – Kids’ Kupboard, because I was unsure of the route. He chose what I considered to be the main route, which had two roundabouts and a lot more traffic. I had told him (repeatedly) that I wanted to take the alternative route.

Oh well. I made it there and I made it back to the Meeting House, which is what counts. I sorted books with Milena and left Kids’ Kupboard with a carload of children’s books. I was pleased about this because children’s books are like candy – they go quickly.

The Great White Hope was feeling better on the trip home, maybe because there were not as many starts or stops. I was pleased.

There was also plenty of space upstairs at the Meeting House because most of the nonfiction books are now downstairs.

I made it home just fine – just enough daylight to take Hrimmi for a walk. This means that the days are getting longer. So tomorrow, I’ll be able to take out two, maybe three horses.

Spring is around the corner. The question is, which corner?
