October 4, 2023: Weather or Not

Today, sunny, breezy, cool. A good day to go for a horseback ride, which is what I did. Early on I took Tyra and Hrimmi out on our trails. It’s not as breezy in the woods, and the views of the distant, snow covered mountains are now breathtaking.

The leaves on the trees create a sound buffer. Now that the leaves are nearly off the trees, I can hear what’s going on up the hill. The neighbors are working on their place – the one who does most of the work hammers away, tap, tap, tappity tap – no powerful pounding going on there. Hearing this, I smile.

Last night we had yet another hard frost. The road wasn’t slippery, and the trails were harder than they’ve been. I did not think the stump, my mounting block, would be slippery, so I did not check it. I fell backwards onto my ass. Hrimmi continued to stand quietly as I got up, although she did appear to be surprised that I was on the ground, as did the dogs.

I took the dogs out twice. If I’d had more time, I would have taken them out again, the third time with Raudi. Time goes fast when you’re out on a nice day, and this one was no exception. I had to go to town (sigh) –trying to take care of the environs and have books and boxes (this is all there is) put away by Saturday a.m.

At this point in time, I am on schedule with what I have to do. I may have to do some organizational work on Friday, a busy day, but I’ll most likely be ready for Seuss Saturday; though right now I am feeling a bit anxious about this.

I momentarily put my hands on the side of my head, wondering what I might write next.

I’ve been thinking about my being a visionary and what might happen with the project. I learned, in looking for the space we now inhabit, to be patient. I don’t have to be as patient now. Now I must be proactive. Our lease will expire in 14 months, and unless we find another place, we’ll be out on the street with our boxed books. Most likely it will then rain, and we’ll have these huge piles of mush to deal with.

As it is now, our side door is located next to a dumpster. It needs to be moved, and soon. It is big, gross, and smelly. I have been watching the restaurant employees empty their garbage into the maw of this big thing – I never before realized how much waste is produced by such businesses.

I’m sure that a lot of it is house scrapes. I can’t imagine that these owners compost their organic matter. There used to be a company, Susitna Organics, and they made windrows of compost. Too bad that they are no longer in business.

Tonight I emptied over 50 buckets of manure into our compost station. Now it won’t freeze in the buckets, or if it rains become too heavy to lift.
