March 20, 2023: Giddy Up

I did go for a ride this morning. This got the day off to a good start. I rode Raudi – she seemed glad to be out. She was alert, may have sighted a moose that was invisible to me. It’s now the best time to ride because there is no grass to distract her. Pretty soon the snow will really start to melt. It will then be warmer, which will motivate me even more to ride.

It sure felt good riding Raudi. And once again she did her rocking horse canter coming up the Murphy Road Hill. I got off her at the top of the hill, gave her a two-fer (two treats), and told her what a good, good girl she was. I think she appreciated the heartfelt gesture.

It was up and down on the book front. I heard via email from Bill who stocks the Sutton Post Office revolving bookcase that someone dumped 50-or-so books down the P.O. drop box and others also left book messes, so we were told. Bill will now need to relocate the revolving bookshelf. Darn.

I asked at the Palmer City Hall if they wanted the Sutton revolving bookshelf and was told maybe, which really is a nice way of saying no.

I next went to the Eagle Hotel to stock their bookcase and met the owner who said that we can go ahead and put bookcases in two or three places. I then asked about available space. He showed me the banquet room and said that we could rent it. I immediately called Pete, who came over and checked it out. We agreed, the $2,000 a month asking price is prohibitive.

But always, there are options, right? I suggested to Pete that we check out grant possibilities. We can pay some, but not all of the costs.

Rebekah, a new board member, drove us around and we checked out local properties. No, nothing materialized that we don’t already know about. We stopped at the Palmer Food Bank to find out what’s going on with their building plans – they have property. The food bank was woefully crowded – their problem is our problem.

We came home, and I checked my email. I Discovered that Northern Air Cargo is donating freight space to the BLBP for books going to the village of Eek. NAC will ship the books to Bethel and Grant Air will ship them to Eek. This, to me, feels like a major accomplishment, even though we have done this in the past.

I got another email message from a woman in Texas who said that the kids down there are in need of bilingual books. So, I will send books there in the next few days.

Yee haw. I feel like we are riding the wave; although at times it feels like we’re clinging to dear life to the surfboard.
