April 26, 2024: Chug a lug

Overcast. I got Hrimmi out for a ride, first thing. We both enjoyed the outing. I just wish I had time to teach her to paint. She picked up the crop and handed it to me. Maybe tomorrow I’ll resume working with her on picking up a paint brush. Yes, I will find the time to do this. And as soon as the snow melts, I will get her cart and harness out and resume cart pulling with her.

I just had another idea. If somehow I can locate a harness and cart, I will teach Sassy to pull a cart, and put books in the cart.

Another idea. I need to find a benefactor to pay for a tricycle bicycle. I have someone in mind. I will approach that person on Tuesday.

A sense of calm prevails on the home front and in the hotel. Most days volunteers appear and give an assist, like today. Pete and I worked very late last night – today I went in at midday, and with assistance, I got enough work done so that I can finish up tomorrow. One thing I did was to take Pam’s advice and first unload the library cart – boxing up the dog and Alaskana books. Then I put the books that had recently arrived on the cart and took it outside. This was a great idea. Now people passing by can get books off the cart. If they come in, we’ll give them a brochure that tells them where the other bookcases are.

After the late afternoon book share, I took the donation box, the banner, a table, two chairs, and eight bins over to the Koslosky Building and set up shop where the bookcases used to be. I do not know if we will have them there again – someone has strung up a wire on the upper wall – it appears as though they are getting ready to hang art there.

Those who came and got books were former bookcase patrons. They all wanted to know what became of the bookcases. What could I say? My standard line is that the building owner told me that the homeless were a distraction. This is akin to what I tell those who ask about our relationship with the local recycling center. I say that they divested themselves of us and leave it at that.

Pete’s now working hard on a capital assessment form for the Mat-Su Health Foundation. I breathed a sigh of relief when he began filling me in on what he’s filling in. He’s been very well organized since the inception of this project, so he knows where all the quotable documents are. Phew. This news is enough to keep me going.

Tomorrow will be another day. My friend and Tae Kwon Do sparring partner is going to bring puppets and entertain us all. I was worried that there would not be enough people, but somehow, I got the word out there.

I will get home in time to ride a horse or two or three.
