February 22, 2024: Fender Bender

Gnarly ass weather today. Last night it snowed about four inches, wet, heavy snow, spring snow some would say. Also, there was a bit of a breeze. Nevertheless, Pete and I headed out of here at 10 a.m. so as to drop off a bookcase made by the Career Tech and Vocational high school students, at the Grizzly Sports Center, where, down a hallway, was an office where we were to meet with a woman who is distributing books for the Knik Tribe.

Tarrah was not there. I had never met her, so I didn’t know this other woman was not her. It was not a smooth introduction because we were both confused. We went and got the books and bookcase from the truck and brought them into the office. I was pleased with the end results of a lot of hard work.

We next stopped at Three Bears Grocery Store and picked up several cardboard boxes. It was as we were heading to the Hotel, turning left at the light onto the Palmer-Wasilla Highway in the direction of town that it happened. Pete had a fender bender. He went to make a turn, on a green light, of course, and a vehicle, going very fast, ran the red light. Boom. If Pete had not stopped when he saw the car coming, there would have been injuries.

The woman in the other car parked her car by the side of the road, and we parked our truck behind her. We got out, she got out. Pete and I first looked at our front bumper. It was damaged. Pete then went to talk to the woman, and I went to check out her car; the front wheel looked out of weird. I think the axle was bent.

Pete and I noticed two differing things about her. I noticed that she had a lot of face piercings. He noticed that she was pregnant. We assessed the damage, we got her insurance and contact information, and then parted company. We drove off, and she remained in place to call a tow truck.

Very soon, after I got to thinking that we should have stuck around. The woman was pregnant. The shock of something like this can cause a person to go into labor. Best to have someone around when something like this happens. I can only hope now that she is okay.

Of course, we were in a hurry. We’re always in a hurry. And so is everyone else. We all should be more concerned about one another. We were scheduled to meet Tom, our realtor, at the historic Eagle Hotel. We got there five minutes early and he was there.

Oh well. Tomorrow will be yet another day.
