April 1, 2025: Har Har Day

Tis the day when people have permission to do witless tricks to one another. Those who are savvy are aware of this. Others who are not so savvy are unaware. It’s a strange world we live in, and it’s getting stranger. My friend Bill said that there is more moisture in the air now than there used to be, which is why it’s gotten so wet here. Yesterday it was miserable out. Today it was sunny in the morning and by the time I got home, it was snowing again. I’m okay with this because I have a warm, dry house.

Pete called our hay dealer and he’s going to pick up some hay tomorrow. He was told that it is not the best hay, but its dry. Well, in a month I’ll be able to hand graze the three mares.

I would like a fourth gelding. I have been told that the Tinni’s of this world are very rare. There must be one like him out there.

I called schools in Bethel this morning, to see any wanted books. A few places did seem wary, I thought afterwards because it’s April 1. I mean, why would anyone on this day call and say, “hey, do you want free books?” One place, the Bethel Detention Center, said they want four boxes. So tomorrow I’ll get four boxes ready to go.

I’m going to try to resume working at home more. I used to, then this project took on a life of its own.

It’s a good life, most of the time. We’ve been able to get grants, which keep the ship afloat. And I am never short of reading material. And I work with cool people. I do at times wish that things had worked out with VCRS, the local recycling center. I still am mystified as to why they gave us the boot. Like us, I don’t think that they imagined we’d be as successful as we have been. There are many, many books out there, so we have never come up short. And we’ve actually done well with repairing and restoring them. We now just discard the ones that are moldy, have been waterlogged, or have scribbles on all the pages. I’m proud of our track record.

We stood, and VCRS stood, to benefit from an equitable partnership. We suggested this, in a memorandum of agreement last fall, but got no response to our query. Sad, really sad, what happened.

Change is a constant, and this a good thing. It’s hard on humans who are creatures of routine. Seems like horses and dogs are more adaptable. Cats, for the most part, are not adaptable. The ones that are, are more like dogs. So it’s better to get a dog. Litter boxes, uh uh. You whistle for a dog, and it comes running to you. You whistle for a cat, and it raises its tail and walks away.

I was not able to home in on anything in this dispatch tonight. I apologize to all of you who expected better.
