May 30, 2025: That Blank Sheet of Paper

This morning, an interview with Big Cabbage Radio, at 8:00 a.m. Called the station and the line was busy so could not get on. Listened as Cheryl Homme, who was to be co-interviewed with me, talked about the upcoming quilts of valor/Bright Lights Book Project silent auction. As Pete said, and I agreed, she did a good job.

I decided to call when she finished and got on the line. Mike (can’t spell his last name and won’t even try) did a really good job interviewing me. The question is, was anyone listening to Big Cabbage Radio at 8:00 a.m.? I didn’t hear back from any listeners, so I don’t know.

Next, at 9:00 a.m. a Zoom meeting with Mike Walsh of the Foraker Group. He talked with the board about the relationship between the executive director and board governance.

Our board, with the addition of a new, more motivated president, added considerably to his commentary. I thought, as I often have, wow, this is what an idea has evolved into. Now there is a BLBP board talking about financial matters and board policy.

I was glad to hear from Mike that as an executive director, I am the one who gets to make decisions about the day-to-day hands on work. For instance, one person commented that yesterday a lot of books came in and perhaps we should start refusing books. I am not sure why, but hearing this a knot formed in my stomach.

I guess I just didn’t like hearing that I’d have to turn away those who are bringing us good books. And also, this and perhaps a few other board members really have no idea as to how I deal with this, an overabundance issue.

Yes, I grew incredibly anxious yesterday when it appeared as though there were far too many books for me to deal with on hand. But today, once I got to the literacy center, my concerns lessened as I began boxing up 14 boxes of books that are now going to be put in the new bookcases in the Big Dipper Ice Cream shop and Lekker Bakery. Also, a Franz Bakery worker came and took eight boxes of books. I’m also going to take three boxes over to Family Treasurers Thrift store in the next few days. This is 25 boxes total that are going out the door.

I know what I’m doing, but those who are not always on site don’t always know this.

I did, before going into the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel, work on Shelf Life. I am now at the point in which I’m no longer revising existent copy but continuing the narrative that I started. I’m almost done with Part II the setting of which is the Meeting House, and ready to start Part III the setting of which is The Eagle Hotel.

I must come to certain realizations in this part. I’m going to hit bottom towards the end of the Part II, and begin to resolve issues in this, the final part. I’m going to figure out why I’m salvaging books, and use the example of books in noting that in general, over abundance is as stressful as is underabundance.
