June 2, 2025: It’s getting Late

It’s 11:35 and dusk. I could have ridden another horse this evening. I got Raudi out and had two nice canters on her. We figured out how to do a canter departure, going from a walk to a canter – it took us 16 years to figure this out. This may have to do with the fact that I was a ways behind her on the learning curve. Horse knows all. Owner knows nothing. Who owns who? Is ownership an issue? The longer I reside with horses, the more questions I have.

This morning, I woke up and Pete woke up and then feigned sleep. I went out to take care of the horses and when I got back into the house, he said he had just thrown up. His eyes were puffy. He thinks the medication he is taking for glaucoma may be the cause of the problem. Well, I thought, we are one step closer to getting that seeing eye dog.

His eye situation is very complicated and could involve laser surgery and/or cataract surgery. I do not understand what’s going on although he has explained it to me several times. I think it has to do with having too many options. And when you have too many options, it’s hard to know what end is up.

I had a zoom meeting with my Foraker Group mentor, Toby, and with Melina, the former president of the BLBP. They were very encouraging and had some good ideas to impart – Melina saying that with budget cuts that we have to become more creative fundraisers. I thought, this woman is speaking my language. I felt cheered by hearing her say this because right now I am working on Colony Day parade particulars with a group of very creative individuals.

As this discussion was going on, Sunny, the immature bald eagle, was fledging. I did not have a different monitor although I could have watched this (I suppose) on my cell phone. I later saw footage – the bird just lifted off a branch adjacent to the nest and took wing. What a great expression, took wing.

Now if I had not been watching Sunny and his mate Gizmo, I would have thought that these birds just one day get up and go. But no, I saw that they practice, sometimes hovering for two, three, four seconds. They also become more alert and attentive to what’s going on around them. They practice nest building. And they learn to eat, this after being fed by their parents. So fledging doesn’t just happen.

I am becoming more wonderous about life occurrences. Another one today. A woman walked into the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel, and we talked a while. She told me that the Bleeding Heart Brewery had a few bookcases with books and that people were bringing books there. So I went over there, entered the place via the back door.

There were two guys drinking beer at a table. I introduced myself and told them about the project. Then lo and behold, I saw Logan in the background, our former videographer was making a podcast.

I say, what were the odds of this?

I am wonderous.
