April 20, 2026: Slop and Glop

This most aptly describes the abysmal state of things here at Squalor Holler. The snow/rain mix began last night and continued all day today. More snow here and more rain in town. Yeech.

The horse pen was deep in slop, so I took the scoop and moved the crap off to the side, this was this morning, on Raudi and Hrimmi’s side. This evening I cleaned out Tyra’s pen.

After doing the first go-through I went to Sutton for my physical exam at the Life House. (I do not know the Native spelling).

It is always calm and peaceful there – I interacted with the receptionist, an intake person, a primary care nurse practitioner, and a phlebotomist. It was a very relaxed hour and a half – I am in what I think they think is good shape, but I think is shit shape. I will do something about this.

I returned home, driving in the slop, and had a very late breakfast. Pete had made himself sourdough pancake batter and left enough for me. Then it was on to town, to the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. Business as usual there – Dan (new hire) and Pete unloaded both Pete and my car, this being the macro portion of the unloading process, and then I took care of the micro portion of the same.

They then headed to town (town being two blocks away) and both did some distributing and getting books from U-Haul. We are now way down on the books that came to us from Anchorage less than two months ago. This means that the volunteers won’t have many books to clean, so I will find them other things to do.

I don’t like this part of the job. Too much responsibility.

Pete and Dan’s doing the other tasks gave me time in which to also work in the literacy annex. I need to take the time to go through the books on hand and come up with a curriculum plan. I still have enough time to do this, but of course realize that time will go by fast, so I’d better do more than thinking about this – now.

Got home, the local free newspaper had run my article about the orchestra benefit. It featured Lynsey’s All Aboard the Concert Caboose poster. Guess that the next one is going to be Summer in the Park(s).

I have thought some now about yesterday’s event. It went just fine, and there was plenty of community support. Pete (thank dog) put himself in charge of raffle prize distribution – and slowly, ever so slowly, the winners are coming and claiming their prizes.

I did not purchase a raffle ticket. I wish that I had – I guess it would have been a conflict of interest for me to do this.

Slop and glop, slop and glop, it appears as though tomorrow will be much the same.
