May 7, 2026: Watching the Days Fly Past

Life sometimes is like being a passenger in a car and watching the scenery fly past – you get glimpses of what’s going on, but blink and you miss something.

I was never in a car by myself until I was a driver. Then it felt quite strange. Still feels strange. I don’t like to drive with someone in the car.

I talked with Dave Chism today at the bakery. I went up to his table – he was underlining text in the New York Times Book Review. I sat down uninvited and started talking, which is something that I never do with anyone, much less someone who is inner circle. I mean, being the former owner of Fireside Books, he is dead center. And now he’s on the board of Big Cabbage Radio. My goodness. I would like for a handful of people to join the Bright Lights Book Project Board.

If wishes were horses. If pigs could fly.

Today I came across a really cool book called, “The Perfect Pig,” about a pig that could fly. It is a very good book with a sad middle and a happy ending.

Lots of people in and out of the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. One was Ruth Simpson, an artist. Cathy, the artist in residence, didn’t feel well, Ruth came to work with her. Cathy was a no show, so I sat and talked with Ruth while she worked.

Her ideas and way of working with images from books were much like Cathy’s. I didn’t do anything. My head was hurting and I was tired.

A woman, a close friend came in, her daughter had died and Mom was bringing her books to us. Incredibly sad. The woman died quite suddenly. A reminder that we come, and this is not a surprise. But going, it can be a surprise. So enjoy your life and truly live for the moment.

It was yet another long day, I had to go to The Women who Care Philanthropic organization event. Three names get drawn and all give a speech. The best speech (as voted upon by one’s peers) wins the pot of money that comes from donors who are present at this event.

This time the speakers were an individual raising money for cancer research, a second locating (sometimes with traps) loose dogs and cats, and the Friends of Palmer Public Library. I had written out my speech, but my name did not get pulled.

The loose dogs and cats woman won. I had this feeling that if I, in speaking for the Bright Lights Book Project, had been one of the three speakers, we would have won.

I just had this feeling that the sentiment on the part of this group was more in favor of the BLBP than it was the FPPL. But what could I say?

This event takes place quarterly. The next time is going to be in September. I guess this is a long time away.

Next: 126. 5/8/26: And so it goes
