September 19, 2026: The New Routine

Well, it isn’t a new routine – its actually an addition to the old routine. I’m now getting both the dogs out for a morning walk. It’s just around the loop, but this is better than no walk at all.

Ryder, now on Prednisone, doesn’t seem to be moving any faster or slower than before. There’s a slight tug on the leash, me going too fast and having to slow down. I am pleased that she’s up for the walk and able to come along. Who knows what Prednisone dreams are like? I hope good.

This morning I had a revelation as I was walking on Sybarite, this being the upper road, and this was that I feel joy when I externalize, that is look directly at and reflect upon the immediate landscape. Today I took time to admire several birch trees, and this made me happy.

Externalizing on hunters, no, not so good. I am happy about the fact that next weekend is the end of hunting season and this means they will be gone. They don’t come around in order to check out the trails or pick wild cranberries.

And few are going to cease being gun obsessed. The Mat Su School District is actually going to arm teachers – and pay for their training.

No, sad to say, much-needed change is not going to come about.

Well today – it was a good day – what with 16 teenagers converging on the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel in order to clean and stamp books. Fourteen of them were from Colony High School, one was from Wasilla High School, and one was from Service High School in Anchorage.

Melissa and Olivia unpacked books so I was able to spend time with them both. The Colony High Students – they were very talkative, a good sign – all worked for two hours, Olivia and Melissa worked for three hours. I figured it out, this came to 30 hours total time spent working for the project.

This is more time than all of our other volunteers put in during the week.

And oh, we were given a pseudo neon sign that reads “Read Books. Be Kind.” Pete and Robert put it in the side window. This after putting a lot of time and thought into getting it hung in the right place.
