September 23, 2026: This Day

I won’t remember much from this day, tomorrow. So, getting what I do remember now on paper (or duly recorded in an online dispatch) is worth saving. Or so I now think.

Another beautiful day. The leaves on the trees are now yellow. One good windstorm will blow them off the trees. They will remain bare for another eight months. If Pete and I were in our right minds, we’d become snowbirds and head south until May. But we are not in our right minds.

Nothing more I’d like than to load up the trailer and head south, with all the animals, including Ryder, who in being given Prednisone, and does seem to have gotten a new lease on life or at least a few more months with us. She is going to have to endure another winter, but maybe she’ll live to see another summer and spring.

I’d have to give up the book project if we headed south. I’m ready but I’m not sure that those who are wanting to take it over are quite ready. So we’ll be here another winter.

The project is getting increasingly more popular. This morning I opened my email and noticed that there was a video there from Martha, in Kenya, Africa. The video showed several children, at what seemed like a boarding school, receiving books. They were all very excited. The school also had a Bright Lights banner.

I showed this video to a lot of people today. I will show it to more.

I would like to get more books to Kenya – it seems like the second time around that this should be easier. Having the video on hand will be helpful.

So I got to the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel at 11:00 a.m., just in time to hand off the car to Dan, who was on his way to Anchorage to pick up Title Wave books. I then retreated into the Wayback room and began sorting umpteen books. Oh my goodness, I thought, I have a lot to do.

I was making progress and hoped to have until 1 p.m. to get stuff done. But at 12:40 p.m. it became a foregone conclusion that I would not get back there any time soon. First, Cheryl showed up, then others followed. Cheryl came with approximately a dozen boxes of books, all in Banker boxes. She was around all day. As is custom, I carefully went through the boxes of books with her, and commented on the books, adding anecdotal information as I was going along.

I don’t do this with everyone. But Cheryl goes out of her way to give us good books, so this is a necessary thing to do.

Others came in and got books and took books. Who, exactly, is now a blur.

I guess this is a good thing because this shows that we are a community entity. Leslie continued to clear off the top shelves of boxes and reshelve the books.

At the day’s end Cheryl gave me a hand with clean up. Now tomorrow’s visit with the philanthropist has been cancelled. A good thing. I have an evening philanthropic event to attend, and this is more than enough for a single day’s efforts.
