May 3, 2026: Not Ready for Prime Time Trails

Late this afternoon, Pete, on Tyra, and me, on Hrimmi, went around the loop, up Jim’s Road, and then down Jim’s trail to Siggi’s Trail. It was raining – spitting, an insidious rain, didn’t seem like much but was dripping off of my helmet.

Jim’s Road is somewhat washed out, Siggi’s Trail is soft and squishy, to which Pete said that, “It’s not ready for prime time.” Hrimmi followed Tyra but not super willingly. She just did not want to deal with the slop and glop. I couldn’t blame her.

However, the grass by the road’s edge is turning green, and the air smells spring like. The smell of the fresh air has me thinking that, yes, the magical aspect of spring is almost here.

I looked at the weather map and noted that there are several days of cloudy weather ahead. Gosh, I could use some sunshine, and I think so can all the animals.

Tyra has the splats really bad again – Zack’s veterinary appointment is next week, so if she can just hang in there. The oddest part of her ailment is that it is so cyclical.

Today, Pete went to a packing clinic and showed those present how to highline their horses. He also had them tie the requisite knots, which was a good thing to do. His having them do this is the teacher in him. He also showed them his pack saddle chainsaw carrier. We were in Wyoming and a cowboy who we stayed with showed him his carrier. Pete was able, just upon seeing it, to figure out how to make one that’s similar. I would not have thought this possible.

Most of my day was spent working on book project stuff. I did what had to be done because I didn’t foresee having time to do this, this week. I wrote an article for the People’s Paper. I let people know, via email, about the upcoming Summer in the Park(s) organizational meetings. And I came up with sign up lists for the Friday Fling and Summer in the Park(s) Events.

I was thinking today, as Pete was telling me about others’ horsey summer plans, that I will take off next summer. Change is a constant and others will appear and disappear – my hope (there’s that word again) that we’ll get more active board members and that an executive director will make themselves known. This person will actively fundraise.

We now do have paid staff, but this is not because we have corporate sponsorship. The latter would pay for an executive director’s salary and also an operations manager salary. I would fall into the latter category.

Yes, this is where we are at, at the beginning of yet another very busy week. To which I say, rain, rain go away. And don’t come again some other day.
