May 4, 2026:Almost

Spring. People around me seem to be more upbeat and energetic. Being outside is now preferable to being inside. Today, Josh the farrier came to put new shoes on the horses. It was raining. In all the years that he’s been our horse shoer, now 15 or so, the weather has been such that he has been able to do his good work in the driveway. Today he worked in Tyra’s enclosure. (It used to be Tinni’s enclosure.)

The mares were a little restless because this was a decided change of routine. They shuffled around a bit and mugged for treats, at least Tyra did, but the job got done. There used to be a time in which I dreaded farrier visits because I presumed my horses would act up. No more. If they now act out of sorts it is because something is amiss.

It was a productive day in the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel. Quiet for a while, then later on four or five librarians from Glennallen came and checked out the book project before dropping off books and heading home.

There was some talk about starting a Bright Lights Book Project satellite program – I could tell in talking with them that that there would be many, many loose ends – and that their program, mainly because of demographics and book numbers, would be different from our program.

I also thought but did not say that we started very, very small, with a handful of books. I think that they might want to leap into getting a full blown project going.

After, people began trickling in for the 4:00 p.m. organizational meeting. About 12 people showed up. I explained what I wanted to do as best I could – I may not have come off as being very confident because I am not. Summer in the Park(s) is going to be a huge endeavor – it already is – and in some ways a complicated affair.

So we shall see what happens.

In addition, a lot of books came in today. Someone dropped off four boxes. The Glennallen women came with at least two carloads full. And Dan brought in books from the Black Birch Bookstore. I looked at all that was there, and I told myself – don’t freak out. You’ve dealt with more books than this before.

Oh oh. I just realized that in the next few days we may get more books from Recycling for No Reason.

I got home late – this was the good thing. The rain had stopped. The sky had some blue in it. And it was relatively warm. So at 9:00 p.m., I got Raudi out and took her for a ride. She’s the sort of horse that has to be ridden often or she gets inflexible mentally and physically. She was balky, but twice in going around the loop she cantered nicely.

In the next few days, I will get into the playground of higher learning and set up obstacles and then take all the animals through them.
