May 16, 2026; Keep Moving

This is what I am doing, all the time, out of habit. If I wasn’t moving, I would by now either be dead or incapacitated. Still, I am stiff and creaky and need to do something about this. The days are going by, and I’m not getting any better.

I don’t think the lack of movement is the cause of the tooth problem. Nor is it the cause of the gut problem.

And how is it that Tyra, a horse, also has G.I. tract issues? If we lived in the Lower 48, we’d take her to a clinic and they’d do an endoscopy. Instead, we live in Alaska where veterinarians simply speculate. However, speculation is not making her any better.

Pete and I were looking up homeopathic remedies tonight. Nothing seems to be any better than what we are giving her.

I had hoped that come spring, she would just get better. Me too. Neither has come to be.

I was reminded of my health issues today, in attending an event, called One Health. It was all about the various ways in which we keep ourselves healthy – for example, there was a yoga class, a climbing wall, a road race – the Alaska Wildlife Bird Rehabilitation Center was present and had on hand a red tailed hawk, an American Kestrel, and a Barn owl.

I was very impressed with how well-mannered these birds were – they were unphased by all the goings on, including a boy throwing small sticks around. This, to a large part, was because the handler was so even tempered.

I had assistance, one group of three volunteers in the morning and two in the afternoon. They helped me set up and put books back in their boxes. Now, they also seemed very healthy.

Alexi and I (she’s one of the high school volunteers) both put on pedometers, which keep track of one’s step count. I easily outdistanced Alexi, and if my pedometer had not given out, I would have won. But swag being swag, it stopped working.

We got swag bags, which held tea and a tea strainer. And free plants were available. I brought home a hanging basket for Pete (a late birthday present), and two spruce trees, two geraniums, and two tomato plants.

This, then, is going to be the beginning of our garden season.

You can now see the buds on the trees; they will open in the next few days. And I can hear the robins, who have returned to their favorite nesting areas.

Pete, who is reasonably healthy, went to Anchorage to Reading Rendezvous and parted company with ten boxes of books. He acquired another seven boxes – given to him by the friends of the library at the Anchorage library, where the said event was being held. Coincidently, I was in Palmer, at the same time Pete was being given books, given books by the friends of the Palmer Public Library. This was a major score, meaning that they at least see us as a place to take discarded books.
