September 22, 2026: Keep Moving

This really is my motto. It’s what I do. I don’t slow down for very much – I am always eager to see what’s around the bend. This goes with being obsessive compulsive.

At least I put the diagnosis to good use. Who woulda thunk it? Or who thinks it? That sorting books would be a mental illness. Or perhaps it isn’t an illness because it is accepted and laudable behavior. Well, I am not going to say to anyone that I suspect that I am obsessive compulsive, not even in jest.

Some, though, they ought not be, are in awe of me. Now if I was doing something else, like say, chain smoking cigarettes, they might think differently and with good reason.

So socially acceptable behaviors are not seen as being abnormal. Go figure.

What got me thinking about this today was the fact that I spent most of my day sorting books, mainly children’s nonfiction. I had planned to leave the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel at 5:00 p.m. but ended up working until 7:00 p.m. I decided to remove the books that were in boxes in the young adult nonfiction section and put them directly on the shelves. This was because Leslie had decided to remove the books that were in the boxes on the upmost shelf and instead have them on shelves directly.

This at first didn’t seem like a good idea to me. First of all, I didn’t think that there would be enough room for the unboxed books. Then I speculated that they might come down if there was an earthquake. I did mention the latter to Leslie and she was skeptical. So I decided to trust her judgement.

I am glad I did. The books, as I said, look jaunty on the uppermost shelf. She put reference books, this including dictionaries up there.

I decided to follow her lead and unpacked the nonfiction encyclopedia books and put them on the lower shelves. This is why I left the former banquet room of the Eagle Hotel late. And that I would do this today instead of tomorrow does seem to indicate that there is some obsessive-compulsive mechanism in my brain at work.

So I didn’t get a horseback ride in. The darkness is now descending. It’s now dark at 8:30 p.m. Well, soon enough, the days will be getting longer. And hunting season ends on September 26th, just 4 days from now. This is the worst part of the season because those who have not yet gotten their moosie moosie are feeling frustrated.

The hunters have been blessed (if you want to call it this) with really good weather. Here’s hoping that the smart moose will avoid being shot and will breed with other smart moose, thus decreasing the likelihood that future generations will inadvertently walk into the line of fire.

This, I must say, is a mighty fine and actually very thoughtful tirade.
